Barry McGee
i've always admired the work and approach of Barry McGee [Twist/Bernon Vernon/Amaze]. initially it was his work that drew me in...great hand styles, clever characters with subtle anti-capitalist messages and minimal use of color. also, dude seems mild mannered and modest yet, his work is so bold and courageous...i like that combination.
later, i learned that he [and his late wife and partner in crime, Margaret Kilgallen [Meta, Matokie Slaughter] was [were] heavy in the train yard moniker business and there was a whole other side and influence to his work to discover. [Freight Train Graffiti offers a great look into the history and development of train yard graf.]
PBS:Art21 does a little [and somewhat boring] feature on Barry and Margaret and one part i enjoy is Barry describing who his target audience is...
recently, i stumbled upon this mini and informal video that gives viewers a glimpse into the world of Barry McGee. i am glad to know this guy is still making art AND, i hope dude is making decent money too.
