Barry McGee
i've always admired the work and approach of Barry McGee [Twist/Bernon Vernon/Amaze]. initially it was his work that drew me in...great hand styles, clever characters with subtle anti-capitalist messages and minimal use of color. also, dude seems mild mannered and modest yet, his work is so bold and courageous...i like that combination.
later, i learned that he [and his late wife and partner in crime, Margaret Kilgallen [Meta, Matokie Slaughter] was [were] heavy in the train yard moniker business and there was a whole other side and influence to his work to discover. [Freight Train Graffiti offers a great look into the history and development of train yard graf.]
PBS:Art21 does a little [and somewhat boring] feature on Barry and Margaret and one part i enjoy is Barry describing who his target audience is...
recently, i stumbled upon this mini and informal video that gives viewers a glimpse into the world of Barry McGee. i am glad to know this guy is still making art AND, i hope dude is making decent money too.

Detroit
every time i come back to detroit, i am inspired, crushed and motivated. the history [art, music, architecture, people], the pride, the devastation, the work people are doing here [and have been for decades] and the hope get me every time. having lived a good chunk of my life in the surrounding suburbs [southfield and royal oak] and having been drawn to detroit [hip hop, graffiti] as a teenager, i recognize an ever present sense of adventure, curiosity, sadness and excitement that is ignited, just as it was when i was 17, in my now adult and not-that-old 30+ something self.
anyways, here is an article from Juxtapoz that features artists doing some crazy isssh in detroit.
